Why are different bar sizes used? Bar sizes of 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm are used in piercings. An 8 mm bar is preferred due to potential swelling after initial piercing. After approximately 2 months of the healing process, a 6 mm or 4 mm bar can be used depending on the area and comfort of use.
