Dos Rios is a division of Finca La Bolsa in the town of La Libertad in the
Guatemalan region of Huehuetenango and is managed by Maria Elena Vides. The farm is located at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,600 meters above sea level. Finca La Bolsa was founded in 1958 by Jorge Vides, the grandfather of the current generation. Originally covered with forests, this land was transformed by Jorge into a coffee farm where Bourbon and Caturra species were grown. Despite having a busy career as a full-time doctor, Jorge's dedication to coffee farming has never waned. Thanks to his contributions in the field of health, he was appointed director of the Huehuetenango National Hospital, which was named after him. Apart from coffee, Jorge established a school on the farm in 1980. This school is still in operation and is recognized by the Ministry of Education.

In 2001, the second and third generations took over the farm and turned their focus to specialty coffee production.

Dos Rios employs 10 permanent workers and 80 to 100 temporary workers every quarter. The farm is spread over a total area of 108 hectares, with an average yield of 1,405 kilograms of green coffee per hectare. The main challenges in coffee production include climate change, unpredictable rainfall patterns, fluctuating fertilizer costs, and a lack of workers. These challenges require careful planning and execution for successful production.

Among the investment plans for the future is to allocate production areas according to coffee varieties in order to maintain quality while increasing yields. In addition, biodiversity is supported by planting more trees to improve environmental efficiency.

Dos Rios has adopted social and environmental responsibility as its basic principle. The farm supports four community schools, provides scholarships for coffee expertise, and runs several reforestation projects.

Yearly An average of 152,000 kilograms of green coffee is produced and the harvest takes place between December and April. The types of coffee grown are a blend of Caturra and Bourbon. Coffee cultivation is meticulously managed, and the harvest time varies according to altitude. Pest control continues throughout the year, and pruning is carried out according to the ANACAFE schedule from February to October. Fertilization, on the other hand, is carried out three times a year, from March to October, based on soil analysis. The fertilizer mixture used consists of 60% chemical and 40% natural ingredients; The average rate of organic matter is 5%. Weed control is carried out from March to November with the aim of facilitating agricultural activities. New coffee seedlings, on the other hand, are usually planted in the April-June period, when the first rains begin.

Coffee The machining process is detailed and quality-oriented. Coffees are hand-picked based on maturity and Brix levels. After collection, it is left to pre-ferment in bags for 24 hours, after which it is weighed, sorted, peeled and fermented for 15 to 24 hours, depending on the climate. The drying process takes 15 to 18 days, and the coffee is constantly moved to ensure even drying. Once processing is complete, the coffee is stored in plastic bags in the farm warehouse. Samples are taken and tested in the quality laboratory. After about two weeks, the coffee is sent to the dry processing plant and the traceability of the entire process is meticulously ensured.

Su Its management is carried out according to the principles of sustainability and efficiency. Watering is carried out only in nurseries, and water consumption per plant is minimal. The water used in the coffee processing process is reused after being purified through filters and natural barriers, and national water treatment standards are followed.

Harmful and disease management is carried out preventively with regular observation. A flowering index is used to predict plant sensitivity depending on weather conditions. The traceability of coffee is managed by the software system and every step of production is recorded on the basis of time and date.

Dos Rios farm does not grow any other crops. The effects of climate change, especially in the distribution of temperature and precipitation, have necessitated the development of a flowering index that drives activities. The farm is facing financial challenges due to rising production costs, labor shortages, and inflation. In order to remain competitive, while focusing on quality in medium and high altitude areas, yield is increased by using resistant coffee varieties in low altitude areas.
