How did our most reliable kitchen tool come about?
Super sharp, US-made steel blades have been gracing kitchen countertops everywhere since 1994. But don't forget: it was originally designed for woodworking. "Who could have guessed that a simple carpenter's tool—a wood plane—would become one of the most indispensable tools for modern chefs?  In 1994, a Canadian housewife, frustrated by how quickly her plane dulled, took one of our planes from her husband's toolbox. She was amazed at how cleanly and effectively it grated citrus fruits for her orange cake. She noticed that the tool, designed for minimal effort in cutting wood and precise wood grating, had extremely sharp teeth that grated without losing its essence. Microplane is now a brand used in millions of kitchens worldwide. The graters, produced using a special process called photo-cutting, are known for their exceptional sharpness and durability. Microplane graters can be used to grate various materials, but they are particularly ideal for delicate ingredients like Parmesan cheese, lemon zest, ginger, and garlic.
