dBodhi was founded in Indonesia in 2007 by Dutch entrepreneur Raymond Davids. The brand emerged from a desire to create a distinctive alternative to the conventional furniture of the time, which was often produced from newly harvested timber and featured similar, repetitive designs. Davids envisioned furniture that would be not only functional, but also rich in character, history, and meaning. With this vision, he began reclaiming aged teak wood from traditional houses located in remote villages across East Java, some of which were nearly a century old. The brand’s earliest collections consisted of tables and cabinets handcrafted using natural materials, traditional Javanese construction techniques, and woodworking knowledge passed down through generations of local artisans. Over time, this approach became the foundation of dBodhi’s distinctive design identity. Today, dBodhi remains a family-owned company and operates internationally while maintaining a strong connection to nature and Indonesia’s rich heritage of craftsmanship. Its furniture is produced in Indonesia, either at the brand’s own design and production studio in Java or in collaboration with carefully selected small-scale local workshops. Each collection is developed to combine traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary and timeless design language. One of dBodhi’s defining characteristics is its extensive use of reclaimed teak wood. The timber is sourced from old structures originally built using mature teak trees grown in East Java, a region renowned for the quality of its teak. Many of these trees were more than 60 years old when they were first harvested. By preserving the textures, variations in colour, and natural marks acquired by the wood over time, dBodhi ensures that every piece has its own unique character. Reusing existing timber also helps reduce the demand for newly harvested wood and limits the environmental impact of production. In addition to teak, dBodhi works with natural and durable materials such as abaca fibre, coconut leaves, rattan, sisal, stone, and metal. These materials are shaped by local artisans using traditional weaving, braiding, and handcrafting techniques. As a result, each product becomes more than a piece of furniture; it is transformed into an original design object that reflects respect for nature, cultural heritage, and the skill of the people who create it. At the heart of dBodhi’s design philosophy are respect for nature, authenticity, responsible material use, traditional craftsmanship, and enduring design. By giving reclaimed materials a new purpose, the brand continues to create warm, characterful, and timeless furniture for contemporary living spaces.
