SPEND A DAY WITH OUR DESIGNERS: MEET MELİS GÜVEN AND TAYLAN ÖZTÜRK
We spent the day with Melis Güven and Taylan Öztürk, creators and designers of Mon Design, who aspire to turn your home into a warm and modern living space with their designs.
At their atelier, while being a part of the production we sat down for a chat to discover the stories of Melis, Taylan and Mon Design.
- Tell us a little about yourselves?
Melis: I grew up in a family fond of every branch of art. After graduating from Fine Arts High School then Istanbul Technical University Conservatory Department, I still continue to pursue my passion in music and Mon was established along side with that.
Taylan: I grew up in my father's sculpture atelier, and graduated from Yeditepe University Department of Plastic Arts. As Melis mentioned Mon Design was established during that period.
- How did you decide to create a brand?
Melis: Actually, I cannot say that there was a decision process exactly. Decoration and interior design was always part of my daily routine, which gradually became a passion and that’s how Mon Design was born.

- Why Mon Design?
Melis: "Mon" symbolizes family in Japanese. And while I grew up I spent a lot of my time in my father’s furniture store full of crystal hunts and handmade wooden furniture, which would be part of people's lives. So for me, Mon represents family.
- Where do you get your inspiration?
Taylan: From nature.
- What is your favorite part of your job?
Taylan: Touching people's lives and being a part of the production process first hand.
- What is the best part of working together?
Melis: Apart from being from the same family, the best part about working together is that we bring together our visions with different practices, With his expertise in sculpture and my aesthetic concern, we shape objects we both like.

- What feeds your creativity?
Melis: The houses I go into, the houses I want to be in, and of course traveling.
- Can you describe your style in 3 words?
Taylan: Simple, timeless, well thought-out.
- What is your favorite thing about Istanbul?
Taylan: The color.
- Who inspires you?
Melis: Firstly my family and if I have to name someone, Frida Kahlo.
Taylan: My father Ümit Öztürk.
- What is your motto in life?
Melis: The more keep quiet the more you hear.
