A Matter of Elements in Nature
The whole universe is said to be created by the combination of four elements. A fifth element that controls and completes the four is accepted to be the spirit or quintessence. Initially proposed by Aristotle, the fifth element appears in numerous religions and traditions. For instance when a tree is considered, the minerals it gets are accepted as the earth, the rain as water, the sun light as fire and the carbon dioxide it gives out as air. But for the tree to be actually “alive”, the fifth element, “spirit” should be present within, as well. The four elements can similarly be explained for humans, also: Blood is the fire, body is the earth, feelings are the water, our breath is the air and the one thing that completes all is the spirit.
