Red poppies are very common in Anatolia and can often be seen on roadsides or near farmlands all over Turkey. The plant itself has beautiful vibrant red delicate flowers with a black center and is often also used in certain herbal remedies. The Turkish name for this flower "Gelincik" is derived from the word "Gelin" which actually means bride in Turkish. This is because in the old days, brides used to wear red in this region. In other words, these delicate looking flowers were named after delicate young brides.
