We spent the day with the creator and designer of Ex Nihilo, Elif Yalçın, who completes the style and energy of women with her jewelry designs.
At her atelier, while being a part of the production we had the opportunity to get to know Elif Yalçın and Ex Nihilo.
- Tell us a little about yourself.
I graduated from Galatasaray University with a Cinema Studies degree. I have a 19 years of bale and modern dance background. After dancing I wanted to experience and be a part of other forms of art. I went to Maden Modern Jewelry Design atelier and started Ex Nihilo after I was trained in jewelry making.
- How did you start designing and making jewelry?
I lived in Paris for a year during college. After I got back from there I felt a void. I wanted to further my interest in accessories and fill the void by creating something. This turned me towards jewelry making. I found peace in jewelry designing and making process. It was like mediation to me. Then I decided to do this as a business, yet I still work alone and don’t want to mess up the comfort it gives me.
- Why Ex Nihilo?
Ex Nihilo is Latin for ‘’out of nothing.’’ Its both a term used in explaining the way God created the world and a philosophical idea of Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit, ‘’out of nothing comes nothing.’’ I chose this Latin term because it’s about creating something out of nothing by adding meaning from within and creating new forms.
- What kind of women do you imagine wearing your designs?
I never imagined an Ex Nihilo woman but I can picture it on women who are a little masculine, elegant on the outside and wild on the inside, free, confident and not shy to be provocative.
- Where do you get your inspiration?
Nature. Creation. Everything spiritual. Astrology, alchemy and archeology.
- What feeds your creativity?
Stories, legends and myths.
- What kind of a style do you have?
Actually the style of my jewelry varies. With every collection I am inspired by a different theme. It kind of depends on my mood. My designs are sometimes gothic, sometimes minimalistic and bohemian. Every collection reflects its own soul. I’m very dynamic therefore I don’t have a definite style, feeling limitless and free while designing motivates me.
- What’s your favorite part of your job?
It inspires and impresses me that what I design and create with my own hands turn into magical objects that people will place value and meaning on, and carry on them.
- Can you describe your style in 3 words?
Sculptural, timeless, edgy.
- Who inspires you the most?
Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, Isabella Blow, Marina Abromovic, Alejandro Jodorowsky.
- What’s your motto?
Being wild at heart.
- What are your top 5 favorite items from hipicon?
